What is an invention?

An invention is a novel and non-obvious, practical solution to a problem. As such it is a new machine, method or improvement on the prior art. It may also be based on a new application of a known technology.

Inventions arise from the needs and problems of their day. Many known inventions may now seem obvious. However, their value can be better understood within their historical context. On the other hand, many inventions can be ahead of their time.

Behind all inventions, there stands the inventor. An inventor is characterised by curiosity, persistence, a sense of purpose and creativity, perhaps even optimism. An inventor is characterised by a burning desire to solve a problem.
