Finnish inventiveness only produced tangible results in the twentieth century, particularly during its final decades. The Foundation's list of Finland's most important inventions is as follows:

  • AIV fodder
  • Flash smelting
  • Xylitol sweetener
  • Development of, and environmentally friendly innovations for, paper machines
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Bioabsorbable implants for treating broken bones
  • Inventions related to mobile phones and IT
  • Cholesterol-reducing margarine
  • Internet encryption system

The dish drying cabinet, radiosonde, icebreaker and the successful use of design in, say, scissors, could be added to the list.
